Irrevocable Divorce in Bahrain

- Revocable divorce: The marriage contract does not finally end under this type of divorce until the woman’s legally prescribed waiting period, known as the iddah, has expired. She may not marry another person during this period.
- Irrevocable divorce: This type of divorce ends the marriage contract as soon as the divorce takes effect.

- Minor irrevocable divorce: In this case, the divorced couple may marry each other again by entering into a new valid marriage contract and agreeing on a new dowry.
- Major irrevocable divorce: This occurs when the husband completes the three pronouncements of divorce. As a result, he cannot remarry his former wife unless she first enters into a valid marriage with another man and the marriage is consummated.
That marriage must then end through divorce or the death of the second husband, after which she must complete her prescribed waiting period. The second marriage must not have been arranged merely to make her lawful for her former husband again. Once these requirements are met, the former spouses may enter into a new marriage contract with a new dowry.
Returning to a Former Spouse After Irrevocable Divorce in Bahrain
To support family stability and preserve family ties, Bahraini law allows former spouses to marry each other again after an irrevocable divorce in certain circumstances. The applicable requirements differ depending on whether the divorce is a minor or major irrevocable divorce.
In the case of a minor irrevocable divorce, the husband may remarry his former wife, but they must enter into a new valid marriage contract in the presence of witnesses and agree on a new dowry.
